During the years of the Second World War, civilians in countries the world over began to take an active interest in self defense training. Historically, self defense training was a major component of basic training in the armed forces. However, prior to the advent of the Second World War and the 1940s, the involvement of the civilian population in self defense training was minimal in many nations.

As people became drawn to self defense training in the 1940s, many of these men and women enrolled themselves in martial arts training programs. Despite the fact that the martial arts originated in Asian nations, citizens in many Western countries became attracted to the martial arts during the Second World War.

The reason that the martial arts serve as a solid foundation in self defense training rests in the fact that the martial arts involve more than just the physical aspect of self defense training. In the final analysis, appropriate self defense training involves more than just physical training.

A comprehensive self defense training program does more than assist a person in developing physical fighting skills. A reliable self defense training program also mentally prepares a person to defend his or her self in the event of an attack or assault. Indeed, statistics demonstrate that a person who undergoes a comprehensive self defense training process that include physical fighting skills and a thoughtful, mental regimen is far more likely to survive an assault or attack than is a person who only has acquired physical fighting skills.

The martial arts are a perfect example of a comprehensive self defense training program or regimen. The martial arts combine a number of different practices including physical training, mental exercises and spiritual growth.

In addition to the growth of self defense training programs amongst civilian populations the world over, self defense training in the form of martial arts continue to be an important component of military basic training. Indeed, nearly every army, navy and air force in the world uses some sort of self defense training regimen (oftentimes based on the martial arts) as part of its overall basic training.

While so many aspects of war in this day and age are undertake using high-tech equipment, hand to hand combat and individualize self defense training remains vital. Despite the wide use of high-tech gadgetry, face to face combat still remains on battlefields in the 21st century. Thus, the mastery of self defense training, including the martial arts, is extremely important for a member of the military forces.

In the final analysis, if you are interested in entering into a self defense training program, you should take a close look at the comprehensive training that is offered through one or another of the various martial arts. By undertaking a comprehensive course of self defense training, you will be far better prepared to defend yourself in the future in the event of some sort of emergency.
